Red Light Vondelpark

De Wallen is one of the most famous red-light districts in the Western world. Unfortunately, the city of Amsterdam has decided to put an end to it due to the disturbances caused by tourists. Without consulting the sex workers, the city has chosen to close 70% of the Wallen. This decision has caused dissatisfaction among the sex workers, who are unhappy with the new policy. To replace the closed areas, the city plans to create an erotic center far outside the city, disregarding the unique character of the Wallen.

This issue has been a topic of ongoing debate between the sex workers and the city of Amsterdam. I wanted to amplify the voices of the sex workers by creating a speculative model of an erotic center in Vondelpark as a statement, since they have not been heard.

For this, I chose Vondelpark, the most beloved park among the people of Amsterdam. During my chat with the sex workers from the Red Light District, I asked what their ideal area would look like. It became clear that many workers wanted their own space in the city. ‘I want it to feel like you’re stepping into a new world.’
